Ulysses S. Grant; the man who won the American Civil War.
Robert E. Lee; the man who lost that same war.
But only one would give their name to my guiltiest of guilty pleasures.
Today’s political climate makes adoration of this vehicle a death sentence from one group and an erroneous invitation to join another.
But through rose tinted glasses: I remember smirking, I remember flying, I remember the good ole boys and the fun times I had watching them even in their weakest depiction.
The Confederacy left its mark, in a way, on motoring with this vehicle’s existence; splitting TV and movie fans, motor purists, pundits and progressives alike, over its name and the flag upon its roof.
But even as the General I’ll Always Follow, I worry that those good times I remember will be gone forever, as the world becomes more and more divided, even if not because of this vehicle.
That being said, he’s still the General I’ll Always Follow; because those times of blissful ignorance of his controversies were one hell of a ride. And if the fun times must come to an end, then that ride was well worth it.
We’ll meet eventually, General, don’t know when, don’t know where. For now though, you ought to rest; at least until the storm subsides.
So until that time comes, I wish safe travels to the car; the ‘69 Charger; the legend; The General Lee.
