The General I’ll Always Follow

The flag you fly is of a cause I will never support,
The colours you bear represent a man with only cruel intent and greed,
Your battle cry motivates only those who see themselves greater than others because of skin,
You share the name of a man so ashamed by his own actions, he wished never to be remembered,
Yet in my childhood, I saw you shine, I heard you sing, I witnessed you fly, I saw a hero,
Only as I grew, did I understand your controversial background, your checkered past, your representation of inequality, the war you were losing,
Yet I still followed you, eventually even flew with you, fought alongside you, won with you,
The cousins you aid have saved the county, the farms, your county, your farm,
The history of your namesake has no impact on the history you’ve made for yourself, the colour you bear coats a hero, your battle cry brings cheers to those who don’t want the rich and greedy to get their way, your name belongs to a hero we don’t want or deserve, but that we need,
That is why I will follow you, despite disagreeing with all you were influenced by, that’s why I will always follow you, the lakeside treasure, the bootlegging hot rod, the sheriff’s bane, the Hazzard Hero, The General Lee

-Timothy Jeynes (Proud Liberal)

Disclaimer: just because I like the Dukes of Hazzard, and by association the General Lee, does not mean I ignore the wrongdoings of the confederates or any conservative party, this is one of very very few exceptions.
